Applied Industrial Technologies Earnings: Why Was the Guidance Raise So Small After a Strong Quarter?

Applied Industrial Technologies (NYSE:AIT) reported fiscal first-quarter results on Tuesday, October 27, with GAAP diluted EPS of $2.97, up from $2.63 and above the $2.89 estimate as screened. Net sales rose 7.6% to $1,291.2 million from $1,199.5 million, with organic growth of 7.1%.

Management raised fiscal 2027 EPS guidance by $0.05 at both ends, to $11.70 to $12.20 from $11.65 to $12.15. The release attributes the increase to a slightly lower diluted share count after first-quarter buybacks. Sales growth of 4.0% to 6.5% and an EBITDA margin of 12.5% to 12.8% were maintained.

Applied Industrial Technologies Segments: Where Did the Growth Come From?

The company reports through a Service Center distribution segment and an Engineered Solutions segment. Acquisitions added 0.3 points of growth and currency 0.2 points, with selling days unchanged at 64.

Engineered Solutions sales rose 14.1% to $475.8 million, all of it organic, and segment EBITDA rose to $71.8 million from $57.6 million, a 15.1% margin against 13.8%. Service Center sales rose 4.2% to $815.3 million (3.5% organic), but its EBITDA margin eased to 13.6% from 13.9%.

Operating income rose 11.3% to $143.6 million and net income rose 9.5% to $110.4 million (calculated from the release tables). EBITDA was $160.3 million, up 9.6%, with a 12.4% margin against 12.2%. Gross margin was 30.4% against 30.1%.

Applied Industrial Technologies Cash Flow: Why Did Free Cash Flow Fall?

Operating cash flow was $86.4 million against $119.3 million, mainly because of a $45.5 million working capital outflow. Capital expenditures were $13.0 million against $7.3 million, leaving free cash flow of $73.4 million versus $112.0 million.

LIFO expense was $5.6 million, or $0.12 per share after tax, compared with $2.6 million, or $0.05, a year earlier. The release reports no adjusted EPS, so the $2.97 figure is on a GAAP basis.

Applied Industrial Technologies Capital Returns: How Much Went Back to Shareholders?

Treasury share purchases were $80.0 million, up from $53.2 million, and average basic shares fell to 36.7 million from 37.8 million. No cash was paid for acquisitions in the quarter, against $2.3 million a year earlier, and the release announced no new deals.

The quarterly dividend is $0.51 per share, payable November 30 to holders of record on November 13. Guidance excludes future acquisitions and future share buybacks, so the lower share count already achieved is what lifts the EPS range.

Applied Industrial Technologies Outlook: What Should Investors Watch Next?

Management described an encouraging start to fiscal 2027, citing a favorable demand environment, solid margin performance and ongoing positive order momentum, and said it remains positively biased given market conditions and order trends. It also cited inflationary headwinds and macro uncertainty.

Key checkpoints are whether the October organic pace of about 10% persists against the guided 4.0% to 6.5% full-year growth, whether Service Center margins stabilise, and whether working capital normalises after the first-quarter outflow. The board also named a new independent chairman at the October 20 annual meeting.
