Profit Outruns Revenue as Funding Costs Fall
Oportun Financial (NASDAQ:OPRT) reported third quarter 2026 results on November 3, 2026. Total revenue was USD 246 million, up USD 7.6 million, or 3%, from USD 239 million, and the company said origination fees from higher Volume drove the gain. GAAP diluted EPS was USD 0.45 against USD 0.11, while adjusted EPS was USD 0.51 against USD 0.39. Adjusted EBITDA grew 37% to USD 56 million. Profit moved faster than revenue because interest expense fell and Credit losses eased. Cost of Debt dropped 193 basis points to 6.1%, helped by repaying USD 68 million of corporate debt, and the net interest Margin ratio rose to 30.5% from 27.1%.
Tighter Credit and the Oportun Forward Strategy
Oportun is a financial services company that makes small-dollar personal loans, including secured loans, to members who often lack traditional credit histories. Net charge-offs fell 10% to USD 71 million, which management linked to a tight credit posture focused on lower-risk originations. Returning unsecured members and secured personal loans grew a combined 25%. The company also introduced Oportun Forward, a plan to simplify the core business, improve offers for qualified applicants and streamline operations, and named a new chief financial officer, chief retail and sales officer and chief product officer. Owned principal balance rose only 2% to USD 2.7 billion, so growth in the Loan book is still modest.
Guidance Raised, but Expenses and Leverage Remain Watch Points
Management now expects origination growth at the higher end of a mid-single-digit range and a full-year Operating Expense increase in the low single digits, up from flat, citing higher originations and severance. Adjusted operating expense rose 9% to USD 92 million on Marketing and personnel costs, and the third quarter included a one-time benefit from a Mexico value-added tax refund. Fourth quarter guidance is revenue of USD 247 million to USD 252 million and a charge-off rate of 11.05%, plus or minus 15 basis points, which is above the third quarter level. Debt-to-equity was 6.2 times, with cash of USD 258 million and USD 735 million undrawn on Warehouse lines. Lenders in this segment remain exposed to consumer credit swings.
Where Things Stand
Adjusted profit jumped 38% because lower interest costs and lower credit losses flowed through a Business whose revenue grew only 3%. The result is better quality than raw growth suggests, but it depends on borrowing costs staying lower and on credit performance holding. Oportun Financial (NASDAQ:OPRT) guided to a higher charge-off rate of 11.05% in the fourth quarter, which implies the third quarter low may not repeat. Adjusted EPS guidance of USD 1.60 to USD 1.70 implies 21% growth at the midpoint, the company said. The next signals are fourth quarter charge-offs, loan book growth and the effect of Oportun Forward on expenses.
