Jackson Financial (NYSE:JXN): Market Risk Benefit Gains Drive the Swing

Jackson Financial (NYSE:JXN) filed its Quarterly Report for the period ended September 30, 2026 on November 3, 2026. The Annuity and life insurer reported pretax income of USD 1.000 billion versus USD 72 million a year earlier. The main driver was a net gain on market risk benefits of USD 1.071 billion, compared with USD 226 million. These are the guarantees embedded in variable annuities, valued at fair value, so changes in markets and discount assumptions move them sharply. Net losses on Derivatives and investments were USD 1.587 billion before a USD 166 million gain on funds withheld reinsurance. Total shareholders' Equity fell to USD 8.481 billion from USD 9.953 billion at year-end 2025, about 15% lower (own arithmetic), as other comprehensive losses widened. The company bought back USD 233 million of stock in the quarter, and Debt rose to USD 2.769 billion from USD 2.030 billion. The extract did not include adjusted operating earnings or regulatory Capital ratios. The exchange listing was not confirmed from a cover page in the material reviewed.

Assurant (NYSE:AIZ): Connected Living Lifts the Outlook

Assurant (NYSE:AIZ) announced third quarter results on November 3, 2026. GAAP net income rose 4% to USD 275.2 million, and GAAP net income per diluted share rose 6% to USD 5.49. Adjusted EBITDA rose 8% to USD 464.4 million, or 12% excluding reportable catastrophes. Global Lifestyle adjusted EBITDA rose 15% to USD 236.9 million, driven by 23% growth in Connected Living from mobile Supply chain volumes and device protection programs. Global Housing adjusted EBITDA rose 5% to USD 268.3 million, helped by lower claims frequency and lower catastrophe Reinsurance costs. The company now expects 2026 adjusted EBITDA excluding reportable catastrophes to grow about 10%. The outlook does not assume prior year reserve development in the fourth quarter, and Global Housing had USD 20.6 million of favorable non-catastrophe development in the quarter against USD 28.5 million a year earlier. Holding Company Liquidity was USD 954 million, and USD 469 million remained under the repurchase authorization as of October 31, 2026. A call was set for November 4, 2026 at 8:00 a.m. ET.

United Fire Group (NASDAQ:UFCS): Premiums Grow While Underwriting Margin Narrows

United Fire Group (NASDAQ:UFCS), a Cedar Rapids, Iowa property and casualty insurer, reported third quarter 2026 results on November 3, 2026. Net written premium climbed 13.2% to USD 371.4 million, while net income slipped 10% to USD 35.1 million, or USD 1.34 per diluted share. A combined ratio adds the share of premium paid out in losses to the share spent on running the business, so a figure below 100% signals an underwriting profit. The third quarter ratio of 94.6% compares with 91.9% a year earlier, and by simple arithmetic on those two published numbers the underwriting margin narrowed from about 8.1 points to about 5.4 points of premium. The prior-year quarter was the company's best third quarter combined ratio in nearly 20 years. Net Investment income rose 13% to USD 29.3 million. Book Value per share was USD 36.51, down 1.0% from December 31, 2025, mainly because unrealized losses on fixed maturities and dividends outweighed earnings. Nine-month net income reached USD 98.5 million, and catastrophe losses can swing quarterly results sharply.

Mercury General (NYSE:MCY): California Rules Shape Premium Growth

Mercury General (NYSE:MCY) filed its quarterly report on November 3, 2026, covering the period ended September 30, 2026. The company primarily writes personal auto insurance through 12 insurance subsidiaries in 11 states. Direct premiums written reached USD 4,893.9 million for the first nine months, compared with USD 4,492.2 million a year earlier. Homeowners premiums grew about 16.6% to USD 1,428.9 million, and California accounted for 83.0% of the total. California approved a 6.9% homeowners rate increase effective July 2026, and the company filed in August 2026 for a rate increase of approximately 5.7% on California private passenger auto, with a requested July 2027 effective date. The Sustainable Insurance Strategy lets insurers include catastrophe modeling and reinsurance costs in rates, provided they raise their share of insured properties in distressed wildfire areas. Geographic concentration is the central risk, and loss reserves are a point estimate that Inflation and litigation can change. Premiums from states other than California and Texas fell to USD 501.0 million from USD 511.4 million. A coordinated financial examination began in the second quarter of 2026, and no material findings have been communicated. The extract did not include earnings, combined ratios or investment results, and no share price move is cited.

Where Things Stand

Jackson Financial earned USD 12.37 a share because a USD 1.071 billion market risk benefit gain outweighed large hedging and investment losses, which makes the result accounting-driven and volatile. Jackson Financial (NYSE:JXN) also saw equity fall, so the headline profit says more about guarantee valuation than steady operating earnings. Assurant (NYSE:AIZ) raised its outlook on Connected Living growth, with caveats on catastrophes and reserve releases. United Fire Group (NASDAQ:UFCS) grew premiums while its margin narrowed from an exceptional quarter. Mercury General (NYSE:MCY) showed premium growth but no earnings in the extract. Watch the fourth quarter valuation of Jackson's guarantees, Assurant's November 4 call and the Mercury auto filing.
