Coinbase Global (NASDAQ:COIN) shares were trading lower before Friday's open, caught between a record-breaking theft at rival exchange Binance and a third-quarter report that showed trading activity drying up. According to market data, the decline was about 5.2% as of 4:04 a.m. ET, and a morning brief showed the stock down 4.72% as of about 7:30 a.m. ET. Another source reported shares near $153.

The overnight shock came from Binance, the world's largest crypto exchange. It suspended withdrawals after an exploit that drained about $6.3 billion, described by one crypto news report as the largest crypto hack on record. Blockchain analytics firms attributed the attack to North Korea-linked hackers. About $3 billion of the stolen Assets has been frozen, according to the same report, and Binance has pledged to cover user losses.

Coinbase was not the victim of the attack, and nothing in its own disclosures links it to the incident. The selling looks like a sector-wide read-through: market data showed Robinhood Markets (NASDAQ:HOOD), Hut 8 (NASDAQ:HUT), Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT), MARA Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) and Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) all down roughly 5% or more in early trading.

What Coinbase reported Thursday

The results, released after Thursday's close, gave bulls little cover. Total revenue was $1.22 billion, flat from the second quarter and down 35% from a year earlier, according to the company's Shareholder materials filed with the SEC. Transaction revenue, the fees tied to customer trading, fell 44% year over year to $590 million, with consumer trading contributing $450 million of that.

There were bright spots. Subscription and services revenue rose 3% sequentially to $570 million and now makes up about half of net revenue. Stablecoin revenue, largely from USDC, came in at $307 million. Net Income was $718.7 million, or $2.51 per diluted share, and adjusted EBITDA jumped 60% from the prior quarter to $333 million. One report grouped Coinbase among crypto names that missed one or both top- and bottom-line estimates, though it did not give the consensus figures.

The fourth-quarter outlook is the bigger concern. Coinbase said transaction revenue for the quarter to date through Oct. 25 was about $165 million, a slow pace against the $590 million booked in the third quarter. The company told investors to use "caution extrapolating results," and guided subscription and services revenue to $550 million to $630 million.

The Binance theft knocked prices across digital assets. Bitcoin touched an overnight low of $76,400, its weakest level since Sept. 18, before recovering to around $77,350, down about 3.1% over 24 hours, according to a crypto news report as of 7:09 a.m. ET. Ether fell about 4%. Crypto futures liquidations quadrupled to $1.57 billion, and a crypto Fear and Greed index slipped to 36 from 43.

The wider tape is not helping. Nasdaq-100 futures were down about 2.6% around 8 a.m. ET, according to market quotes, as Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s and Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s results revived worries about the cost of the AI buildout. S&P 500 futures were down about 1.1%, while Dow futures were roughly flat.

Coinbase's membership in the S&P 500 puts it in the portfolios of index funds, and it has become one of the most direct ways for stock investors to get exposure to crypto activity. That cuts both ways on a day like this, when exchange-security headlines drive the whole sector.

Risks and what to watch

A shaky market can sometimes push users toward regulated US platforms, but there is no evidence yet of such a shift, and confidence shocks have usually weighed on trading volumes across the industry. Key risks include further crypto price declines, weaker retail trading and any regulatory fallout from the hack.

Traders will watch whether Binance resumes withdrawals, how much of the stolen money is recovered, and whether bitcoin holds above its overnight low. On the macro calendar, Tuesday's midterm elections and next Friday's October jobs report are the next big tests for risk appetite.
