Block (NYSE:XYZ) edged higher on Thursday, October 22, 2026, posting a modest gain on the S&P 500 after BMO upgraded the payments company to Outperform from Market Perform.
The rise was small, but it stood out given the backdrop. The S&P 500 fell 93.74 points to 7,663.43, its worst session since July, and bitcoin, an asset closely associated with Block, slid sharply.
BMO turns positive
BMO's move to Outperform from Market Perform signals that the bank now expects Block's shares to beat the broader market. Upgrades of this kind can help to draw buyers back into a stock, particularly when sentiment toward a sector has been mixed.
On Thursday, Block finished in positive territory despite crosscurrents from crypto and tech that might otherwise have pulled it lower.
What Block does
Block, formerly known as Square, runs two main businesses. Square provides payment hardware, software and financial services to merchants, from small cafes to larger retailers. Cash App is a consumer finance app that lets users send money, receive paychecks, invest in stocks and buy and sell bitcoin.
The company has long been one of the most prominent corporate supporters of bitcoin. That link means its shares can be influenced by moves in crypto markets as well as by trends in consumer spending and payments.
Headwinds from crypto and tech
Thursday offered few favors on those fronts. Bitcoin fell to around $81,200 to $81,300, and it suffered its biggest drop since June. Crypto-linked stocks were weaker, with Coinbase (NASDAQ:COIN) and Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR) both falling.
Technology stocks were also under heavy pressure. The Nasdaq Composite tumbled 694 points to 26,008.86, its steepest drop since June 5, after heavy AI spending plans from Meta Platforms (NASDAQ:META) and a slightly light outlook from Lam Research (NASDAQ:LRCX) revived worries about the cost of the AI build-out. The Nasdaq lost about $1 trillion in market value.
Against that backdrop, Block still managed a modest gain on the day of the BMO upgrade, with financial stocks broadly firmer across the S&P 500.
Financials and breadth held up
Under the surface, the market was healthier than the headline indexes suggested. About two of every three S&P 500 stocks rose, according to market reports, and the equal-weight S&P 500 finished higher. Financials were among the sectors that gained, alongside consumer staples, health care and utilities.
Treasuries rallied strongly, with the 10-year yield falling back below a closely watched threshold for the first time since September 22. The labor market looked firm: initial jobless claims fell to 194,000, below the 200,000 expected and the fewest in about three months, a backdrop that tends to support consumer spending and payment volumes.
Block's Bitcoin Link and Consumer Signals
For Block, the direction of bitcoin will remain a factor, given its crypto exposure through Cash App and its own holdings. Investors will also be watching consumer-spending signals, including Friday's final University of Michigan sentiment reading and S&P Global purchasing managers' indexes. The Federal Reserve's decision on October 28 and September PCE inflation data on October 29 could shape the outlook for consumer finance and payments stocks into the end of the year.
