Asbestos Reserve Addition and Catastrophe Losses Weigh on the Quarter

Results absorbed a $295 million asbestos reserve addition and $538 million of pre-tax catastrophe losses. Net favorable prior-year development still came in at $234 million pre-tax after the asbestos charge. Management described pricing as stable and loss trends as in line with expectations.

Unrealized investment losses widened to $6.4 billion after tax as rates rose, which management attributed to interest rates rather than credit. Adjusted book value per share stood at $172.47, up 15% from a year earlier. The company returned $1.8 billion to shareholders in the quarter and $8 billion since the start of 2025.

The stock carries a market capitalization of about $81.16 billion, a forward price-to-earnings ratio of 12.89 and a dividend yield of 1.21%. Its 52-week range is $261.87 to $398.70, so shares sit near the top of that band. Truist raised its price target to $435 and Evercore ISI lifted its target to $372, while the analyst consensus remains Hold.

Outlook: Fixed Income Earnings Guidance and Fourth-Quarter Auto Pressure

Management expects fourth-quarter after-tax fixed income net investment income of about $875 million, implying roughly $3.3 billion for 2026 and more than $3.6 billion for 2027. The expense ratio is projected slightly below 29% for both years. A higher cyber quota share cession will trim net written premiums by about $165 million in the fourth quarter and $230 million in 2027, with minimal earnings impact.

The auto underlying loss ratio is expected to run 5 to 6 points above the third quarter in the fourth quarter. Fourth-quarter results are the next scheduled catalyst.
