Rocket Companies (NYSE:RKT), the Detroit-based mortgage, real estate and Personal Finance company behind Rocket Mortgage, rose 6.04% on Friday. The gain followed third-quarter results released on October 29 and came alongside a decline in Treasury yields, a combination that helped the stock even as the broad market sold off.
A Large Business at Scale
Total net revenue was $3.284 billion, while adjusted revenue, which strips out changes in the Fair Value of mortgage servicing rights, was $2.574 billion. GAAP net income was $709 million and adjusted net income $419 million, with adjusted diluted Earnings of $0.15 per share against estimates of $0.13 to $0.14. Closed mortgage Loan origination volume totaled $43.6 billion, including $33.5 billion excluding the correspondent channel and $10.1 billion from correspondent lending.
Guidance and Rates
Rocket guided fourth-quarter adjusted revenue to $2.1 billion to $2.3 billion, below the third-quarter level, consistent with the usual seasonal slowdown. Mortgage lenders are highly sensitive to interest rates, because lower rates bring more refinancing and purchase activity. Treasury yields fell as investors moved into bonds during the Equity sell-off, even though Federal Reserve officials said rates may need to go higher and futures priced a strong chance of a December hike.
A Different Driver Than Technology
The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points, or 1.8%, to 7,580.07 and the Nasdaq Composite dropped 747.73 points, or 2.9%, to 25,437.00, as Intel (NASDAQ:INTC)'s weak outlook triggered a chip rout and Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN)'s results revived worries about AI spending. Financial companies tied to housing and consumer Credit traded more on rates and their own results. Not every lender fared well, as Credit Acceptance (NASDAQ:CACC) fell sharply after reporting a net loss.
Rates Are the Biggest Factor
Rocket has expanded its servicing business, which earns ongoing fees and performs better when rates stay high, giving it some balance against originations. Investors will watch the path of mortgage rates, origination volume through the holidays and whether fourth-quarter results land within guidance.
