CleanSpark (NASDAQ:CLSK) slipped in premarket trading on Thursday as the same Margin squeeze that hit other Bitcoin miners weighed on its shares.
Lower before the open
CleanSpark shares fell in premarket trading on Thursday, October 29, trading at $8.30 before the opening bell, according to one report. The stock was one of several bitcoin miners to move lower early in the day.
The report attributed the weakness to the same driver that hit Riot Platforms (NASDAQ:RIOT): pressure on miners' margins. CleanSpark did not issue company-specific news to explain the move. It traded with its peers.
The arithmetic of mining
Bitcoin miners earn new coins by contributing computing power to secure the network. The number of coins released is fixed, so the more computing power competing for them, the less each participant earns for the same effort.
That computing power, known as hashrate, was near a record on Thursday, according to the same report. A crowded network means each miner must spend more on electricity and equipment to produce the same amount of bitcoin. Unless the price of bitcoin rises to compensate, margins narrow.
Bitcoin did not provide that cushion. The report put the Cryptocurrency at about $80,000. One midday snapshot showed it at roughly $81,611, while a later market ticker showed about $77,719, though the timing of that drop could not be confirmed.
A sector-wide squeeze
CleanSpark was part of a broader pullback in crypto-linked stocks early on Thursday. Riot Platforms and MARA Holdings (NASDAQ:MARA) also fell in premarket trading, according to the report, while Galaxy Digital (NASDAQ:GLXY) and Circle Internet (NYSE:CRCL) slipped too.
Strategy (NASDAQ:MSTR), the company that holds the largest corporate stash of bitcoin, fell in after-hours trading after reporting its results. Its Earnings were driven by bitcoin's value, but Revenue missed forecasts, according to another source.
Energy and rates in the mix
CleanSpark's costs are dominated by electricity. The company operates Mining sites in the United States and has emphasised access to lower-cost power. The September PCE data, released Thursday, showed energy prices climbing sharply in the month, tied to a war-related oil squeeze. WTI settled at $102.00 a barrel and Brent at $114.88.
Interest rates also matter. The Federal Reserve held rates steady on Wednesday in a 10–2 vote, with Governor Lisa Cook and Cleveland Fed President Beth Hammack dissenting in favour of a hike. Fed Chair Warsh said there is "no soft Inflation target and no implicit inflation target." Thursday's data showed third-quarter GDP growth accelerating and PCE inflation running hot, keeping the prospect of a December hike alive.
Tighter policy tends to weigh on speculative assets, including bitcoin and the stocks most closely tied to it.
A split market
The broader market told a different story. The Russell 2000 gained 28.71 points to close at 2,859.22, outpacing the large-cap indexes. The S&P 500 fell 23.59 points to 7,720.39, and the Nasdaq Composite tumbled 365.13 points to 26,184.72, dragged lower by Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL)'s worst day since its 2004 IPO.
The rotation favoured health care, financials and real estate. One market strategist said: "Money is rotating within the market rather than leaving it." Crypto miners did not share in that inflow.
What to watch
For CleanSpark, the outlook depends on bitcoin's price, network hashrate and power costs. Investors will look for production updates and any commentary on how the company is managing margin pressure as competition intensifies.
Broader factors also matter. Friday's Employment Cost index and the Fed's December 8–9 meeting could influence risk appetite for crypto-linked stocks. Any sustained move in bitcoin, in either direction, is likely to be amplified in miners' share prices.
