Highlights
- LEAG and Fluence to build 1 GW / 4 GWh GigaBattery Jänschwalde project in Germany.
- Fluence’s Smartstack™ platform to power the storage system for grid reliability and trading.
- Marks Fluence’s largest single energy storage project worldwide.
LEAG Clean Power GmbH and Fluence Energy GmbH, a subsidiary of Fluence Energy, Inc. (NASDAQ:FLNC) have unveiled plans to develop Europe’s largest battery energy storage system. The 1 GW / 4 GWh installation, known as GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000, will be in Jänschwalde, Germany, and will employ Fluence’s Smartstack™ energy storage technology.
The project represents a significant milestone in expanding large-scale battery storage deployment across Europe and will be Fluence’s largest single project globally.
LEAG’s GigawattFactory Approach
LEAG Clean Power, a division of the LEAG Group, is integrating solar and wind generation with flexible power plants and large-scale storage as part of its GigawattFactory concept. This model aims to enhance supply security and support Germany’s renewable energy transition, particularly in the Lusatian region.
“With this project, we are igniting another growth engine for our GigawattFactory,” said Adi Roesch, CEO of the LEAG Group. “By constructing gigascale storage facilities, we are addressing one of the biggest challenges of the energy transition: the constant availability of energy regardless of the availability of renewable energies. The key to the energy system of the future lies in a combination of renewable energies, storage facilities that can be used as needed, and flexible power plants.”
Fluence’s Technology and Project Role
Julian Nebreda, President and CEO of Fluence, stated, “We are proud to partner on a project of this scale and importance and congratulate LEAG Clean Power on this milestone for the energy future of Germany and Europe. This flagship project demonstrates that when expertise, vision, and courage come together, a major transformation is possible. Together, we can transform the energy system and thus the foundation of our economy and our everyday lives.”
The GigaBattery Jänschwalde 1000 system will provide key grid services, enable energy market participation, and strengthen Germany’s energy security. Designed as a four-hour storage facility, it will support grid stability and maximize the use of existing grid connections.
“The size of this project makes it something special,” said Thomas Brandenburg, Managing Director of LEAG Clean Power GmbH. “The technical design as a four-hour storage facility helps to stabilize the grid and enables optimal utilization of the existing grid connection.”
Markus Meyer, Managing Director of Fluence Energy GmbH, added, “As a company with deep roots in Germany, we are honored and proud that our technology will play a key role in the transformation of both the country and the region.”
