What pushed Diamondback Energy (NASDAQ:FANG) higher on a day when most of Wall Street sold off? The Permian Basin oil producer, which trades on the Nasdaq under the ticker FANG and is a member of the S&P 500, closed Friday, October 30, 2026 at $212.08, up $5.65 or 2.74%, according to market data. The S&P 500 fell 1.82% the same day, according to market data. No new Diamondback press release or SEC filing was found for Friday, and the company's third-quarter results were not due until after the market closed on November 2.
The move looks driven by the oil market. Market live coverage said Brent rose to about $112 a barrel and WTI to about $104 as traders reacted to reports that the U.S. may resume strikes on Iran, which could disrupt energy flows. For a producer that sells mostly crude, higher prices translate fairly directly into expected cash flow.
The oil backdrop
Crude has been the main story for energy shares in 2026. Market data weekly summary said Brent settled near $113.10 on Friday, up about 2% on the day and 13.6% for October, its fourth straight weekly gain. WTI settled at $104.12, up 15.2% for the month. The same summary cited intensifying attacks on shipping around the Strait of Hormuz, with 43 security incidents logged in October, and a Goldman Sachs (NYSE:GS) estimate that the threat of Supply disruption adds roughly $27 a barrel to Brent. U.S. crude inventories fell for a fourth straight week, to 410.6 million barrels, according to the summary's reading of EIA data.
Other energy names were also strong. Market data said Exxon Mobil (NYSE:XOM) and Chevron (NYSE:CVX) were among the few bright spots Friday after beating estimates, with both briefly touching record highs. Treasury yields fell as investors sought safety from the AI-led tech sell-off, with the 10-year yield near 4.93%.
What Diamondback does
Diamondback, based in Midland, Texas, is an independent oil and gas company focused on acquiring, developing and producing unconventional onshore reserves, mainly in the Permian Basin of West Texas, according to its Earnings release. It is one of the largest Permian producers. In the second quarter of 2026 it produced 525,000 barrels of oil per day and 1.018 million barrels of oil equivalent per day in total, which the company said surpassed the one-million-BOE-a-day milestone. Its forward-looking statements also mention a drop-down of mineral and Royalty interests to its Subsidiary Viper Energy.
Recent financials
In its second-quarter 2026 release, Diamondback reported Net Income attributable to the company of $1.882 billion, or $6.65 per diluted share, and adjusted EPS of $6.48. Operating Cash Flow was $3.589 billion and free cash flow was $2.33 billion, on cash Capital spending of $996 million. Net Debt fell about $1.6 billion in the quarter to $12.3 billion. The company paid a $1.10 base dividend, bought back about $141 million of stock in the quarter, and doubled its repurchase authorization to $16.0 billion in July, with about $9.9 billion remaining. It raised full-year 2026 guidance to more than 522,000 barrels of oil per day and more than 1.0 million BOE per day, and kept cash capex near $3.9 billion.
An October 8 Form 8-K gave a preview of the third quarter. Diamondback reported an unhedged realized oil price of $87.30 a barrel, or $85.89 after hedges. Natural Gas realized just $1.12 per Mcf unhedged and NGLs $20.02 a barrel, reflecting weak Permian gas pricing. The company expected a net cash loss on derivative settlements of $97 million and a non-cash loss of $85 million.
Expectations for the third quarter
Market consensus put third-quarter EPS at $4.92, up 59.7% from a year earlier, after a 21.5% upward revision over 30 days. It put Revenue at $4.29 billion and average daily production near 1.015 million BOE per day, with a hedged oil price of about $79 a barrel. The realized price in the 8-K was above that oil assumption, which may have helped sentiment into the print.
Revenue per employee and valuation
Diamondback ranks among US companies with the highest revenue per employee. Market data lists trailing revenue of $16.25 billion and 1,762 employees, or roughly $9.2 million in revenue per employee. That reflects how few people a modern shale operation needs relative to its production.
Market data put the Market Value at about $59.4 billion. The trailing P/E was 41.4, because trailing net income of $1.46 billion was down 61.8% from a year earlier, but the forward P/E was only about 9.3. The Dividend was listed at $4.40 a share, a yield of roughly 2.1%. Analyst views are mixed but mostly positive. Market data noted Morgan Stanley (NYSE:MS) raised its target to $222 from $216 at Equal Weight, Scotiabank started coverage at Outperform with a $250 target, Jefferies (NYSE:JEF) raised its target to $215 from $205 at Hold, and Stifel (NYSE:SF) resumed at Buy with a $259 target. Earlier, a Stephens family Investment vehicle filed to sell about 9.08 million shares.
Risks
The biggest risk is that the war premium in oil fades. If diplomacy succeeds, prices could fall quickly, and the market data summary noted a U.S. proposal for a temporary peace arrangement is moving through Qatari mediators. Weak Permian gas prices hold down realizations on gas and NGLs. Hedging losses reduce some of the benefit when crude rallies. Large stakeholder sales can weigh on the stock, and the drop in trailing earnings shows that profits can swing.
What to watch next
The key event is the third-quarter report after the close on November 2 and the call on November 3. Investors will look at oil volumes against the 517,000 to 527,000 barrels per day guided for the quarter, capital spending, free cash flow, and how much goes to Buybacks and debt reduction. Any first look at 2027 plans will matter, as will U.S.-Iran headlines, the November 3 U.S. midterm elections, and the EIA inventory report on November 4.
