Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP): A Small Miss in the Metric Everyone Watches

Shopify (NASDAQ:SHOP) reported third-quarter results before the market opened on November 3, 2026. Revenue of USD 3.74 billion grew 32%, Operating Income rose 66% to USD 568 million, and free Cash Flow of USD 816 million was 22% of revenue. The problem was volume. Gross merchandise volume of USD 119.1 billion, up 29%, came in slightly below the roughly USD 120 billion expected and slower than the 32% growth of the second quarter, while subscription revenue of about USD 836 million fell short of a roughly USD 850 million consensus. One published analysis noted the stock traded at about 64 times 2027 earnings estimates before the report, so a small miss was enough to trigger selling. Published intraday moves ranged from 8.7% to 10%, leaving the shares about 22% below their October record. High valuations leave little margin for error, and a slowdown in merchant volume could pressure growth. The company guided fourth-quarter revenue growth in the low thirties and expects operating expenses to fall to 29% to 30% of revenue from about 32%, a target investors will want to see met. Competition from other commerce platforms and consumer spending uncertainty are further risks.

Zebra Technologies (NASDAQ:ZBRA): Growth Beat, Margin Missed

Zebra Technologies (NASDAQ:ZBRA) reported third-quarter results on November 3, 2026. Net sales of USD 1,614 million rose 22.3%, organic growth was 11.3%, and non-GAAP earnings of USD 4.95 a share compared with USD 3.88 a year earlier. The shares still closed down 8.76%, after trading down about 14% before the open. The reason was gross margin: the adjusted figure was 46.0% against 48.2% a year earlier, a fall of 220 basis points, and below a published estimate near 47.7%. Fourth-quarter guidance calls for non-GAAP earnings of USD 5.00 to USD 5.40, sales growth of 10% to 14% and an adjusted EBITDA margin of about 22%. If component costs stay high, margins may not recover quickly, and the company must decide how much to pass on to customers. A premarket fall of about 14% that narrowed to 8.8% shows how uncertain the reaction was, and large moves can reverse. Investors should also read the segment mix, since faster growth in one unit may carry different margins from the rest. Cash generation against the full-year free cash flow floor of USD 1 billion is a further gauge of quality. The Connected Frontline segment, up 34.6% to USD 949 million, grew far faster than Asset Visibility and Automation, up 8.1%.

Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ:TRI): A Cent Short and an AI Question

Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ:TRI) reported third-quarter results on November 3, 2026. Revenue of USD 1,833 million grew 10%, with organic growth also at 10%. Adjusted earnings of USD 0.81 a share were up from USD 0.71 a year earlier, about 14% higher on simple arithmetic, yet below a published estimate of USD 0.83, which is a single estimate. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 35.5% against 35.8% a year earlier. The shares closed down 9.87%. Guidance for 2026 is total revenue growth of about 9.5%, organic growth of 8.5% to 9.0% and an adjusted EBITDA margin of about 39%, with guidance for its three largest segments unchanged from August 5. The risk is that AI tools from larger technology companies compress Demand or pricing for legal and tax software. Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ:TRI) has now seen share price falls of about 9% twice in three months, which can reset sentiment for some time, and investors will want proof that heavy AI Investment is speeding up growth. The prior quarter had stronger per-share earnings, with adjusted earnings of USD 0.99 on revenue of USD 1.954 billion, so third-quarter earnings fell sequentially, though management had guided a third-quarter margin near 36% that included severance costs.

Sysco (NYSE:SYY): A Thin-Margin Business With a Back-Loaded Year

Sysco (NYSE:SYY) reported first-quarter fiscal 2027 results on November 3, 2026. Sales of USD 21.744 billion rose 2.8% but missed a published estimate near USD 22.02 billion by about 1.3%, simple arithmetic on two numbers. Adjusted earnings of USD 1.19 a share rose from USD 1.15, and adjusted operating income was USD 927 million, up 3.2%. The company reiterated adjusted earnings growth of 9% to 11% for the year but said sales growth should be at the lower end of 6% to 7%, citing lower industry inflation. Case volume at its United States business rose 2.6%. The shares fell about 9%, with published market data showing between 9.0% and 9.3%. Adjusted operating income is a margin of about 4.3% on sales, simple arithmetic, so small changes in fuel or Inflation matter a great deal. Earnings growth of 3.5% in the first quarter is well below the full-year target, so Sysco (NYSE:SYY) needs faster growth in the rest of the year. The company returned USD 264 million to shareholders through dividends in the quarter, so cash returns continue, but restaurant traffic, fuel prices and inflation are outside management's control. A company that moves its sales range down once may do so again if inflation stays low.

Where Things Stand

Four good-looking reports produced similar drops because each missed the one number the market cared about most: volume at Shopify, gross margin at Zebra, a cent of earnings at Thomson Reuters and sales at Sysco. In every case growth was positive, so the selloffs reflect expectations rather than deterioration. Shopify was priced at about 64 times 2027 estimates, and Zebra reversed a premarket fall of about 14%. Thomson Reuters (NASDAQ:TRI) fell about 9% twice in three months. The next evidence will be fourth-quarter margins at Zebra, organic growth at Thomson Reuters against its 8.5% to 9.0% guide, and Sysco's second-quarter sales growth. A one-day drop of about 9% can overshoot or continue, and none of these moves is a forecast.
