Restructuring and Argentina Charge Produce the Quarterly Loss
Ashland (NYSE:ASH) reported fourth-quarter fiscal 2026 results on November 3, 2026, for the quarter ended September 30, 2026. Sales were USD 498 million versus USD 478 million, with a net loss of USD 16 million, or USD 0.35 per share, against Net Income of USD 32 million. The loss from continuing operations was USD 17 million. Unallocated and other expense jumped to USD 44 million from USD 11 million, which the company ties to higher restructuring charges and a cumulative translation adjustment from liquidating its Argentine entity. On an adjusted basis, income excluding intangibles amortization was USD 52 million, or USD 1.12 per share, up from USD 1.08, and adjusted EBITDA edged up 2% to USD 121 million.
Life Sciences and Personal Care Offset Hopewell Problems
Ashland is a specialty additives and ingredients company serving pharmaceuticals, personal care and coatings. Life Sciences sales rose 4% to USD 180 million, with pharma up about 6%, and adjusted EBITDA rose 16% to USD 64 million. Personal Care sales grew 8% to USD 163 million, and adjusted EBITDA rose 14% to USD 49 million. Specialty Additives sales were flat at USD 131 million, but adjusted EBITDA dropped to USD 20 million from USD 29 million because lower productivity at the Hopewell plant created unfavorable absorption, meaning fixed costs spread over fewer units. Management said the key productivity investments are complete and the focus is now on raising output. Adjusted EBITDA margin was 24.3% against 24.9%.
Fiscal 2027 Guide, Cash Flow and Leverage Risks
For fiscal 2026, sales were USD 1.863 billion and adjusted EBITDA was USD 385 million, down from USD 401 million, with margin of 20.7% versus 22.0%. Net income was USD 4 million after a USD 845 million loss in fiscal 2025, which included a USD 706 million Goodwill impairment. Operating Cash Flow rose to USD 385 million, and the company ended the year with about USD 480 million of cash, USD 976 million of liquidity, net Debt of USD 891 million and net leverage of 2.3 times. Guidance implies adjusted EBITDA growth of roughly 5% to 13% over fiscal 2026 (own arithmetic comparing the guided range with the USD 385 million reported). Risks include raw material and freight volatility, soft energy and resources Demand and Hopewell execution. The company also expects free cash flow conversion above 40% of adjusted EBITDA.
Where Things Stand
The loss reflects charges, not a collapse in the operating business. Ashland (NYSE:ASH) booked a USD 17 million continuing-operations loss mainly because of restructuring and a one-time translation item, while adjusted EBITDA still grew 2% and the company guided fiscal 2027 adjusted EBITDA to USD 405 to 435 million. The outlook rests on Hopewell productivity improving and pricing continuing to cover costs. Fiscal 2027 quarterly results and the plant's output are the main markers.
