Currency Pushes Gross Margin 5.3 Points Below Last Quarter

Magnachip Semiconductor (NYSE:MX) announced third-quarter 2026 results on November 4, 2026. The company designs and manufactures analog and mixed-signal power semiconductors for industrial, automotive, communication, consumer and computing uses. Gross margin fell to 14.0% from 19.3% in the second quarter and 18.6% a year earlier. Power Analog Solutions margin dropped to 10.7% from 17.2% sequentially, while Power IC margin improved to 45.0% from 40.9%. The CFO said revenue met guidance but margin fell short, mainly because of unfavorable foreign exchange movements. Year on year, Power Analog Solutions sales fell 4.6% and Power IC sales fell 1.3%, with the segment margins down 5.3 points and up 1.8 points respectively.

Losses Widen Even as Adjusted EBITDA Improves Slightly

Net sales slipped 1.6% sequentially to USD 44.0 million, with Power Analog Solutions at USD 39.6 million and Power IC at USD 4.3 million. The operating loss widened to USD 12.9 million from USD 10.0 million in the second quarter. The non-GAAP adjusted loss, which excludes items listed in the company's reconciliation, was USD 10.7 million, or USD 0.29 per share, versus USD 0.4 million, or USD 0.01, a year ago. Adjusted EBITDA, however, improved to a loss of USD 3.5 million from a loss of USD 4.2 million in the second quarter and USD 4.0 million a year earlier. The year-ago operating loss was USD 11.5 million.

Navitas Investment, New MOSFETs and a Fab Shutdown Risk

Magnachip announced a USD 5 million strategic Equity Investment by Navitas Semiconductor and launched 15 sixth-generation E6 Super-Junction MOSFETs for TVs, notebook adapters, PC power supplies and industrial uses. The CEO described a transformation away from competing mainly on price. For the fourth quarter, margin guidance of 10% to 12% reflects lower utilization from a power shutdown in the fab for a substation upgrade and a stronger Korean won. The midpoint of revenue guidance implies a 2.2% sequential decline and 6.0% year-on-year growth from USD 40.6 million, while the fourth quarter of 2025 gross margin was 9.3%. Management also flags headwinds on legacy products and foreign exchange volatility.

Where Things Stand

Currency and fab disruption pushed the margin down. Magnachip Semiconductor (NYSE:MX) kept revenue within its guided range, but gross margin of 14.0% missed the 17.0% to 19.0% guide, mainly because of foreign exchange, and the company now guides to 10% to 12% next quarter as the Korean won strengthens and utilization falls during a substation upgrade at its fab. With about USD 87 million of cash and continuing losses, the plan depends on newer products replacing legacy lines over time, which management says will take time, and gross margin trends in the fab will be affected by the won. The release gives no share price reaction. Next markers are the fourth-quarter margin outcome and the E6 MOSFET ramp.
