Operating margin widens even as gross margin eases
Gross profit was 48.2% of sales, compared with 48.5% a year earlier, with the company citing unfavorable price variances and higher freight costs. Selling, general and administrative expenses fell to 28.7% of sales from 31.2%, helped by lower legal fees, acquisition-related integration costs and employee termination benefits.
Research and development expense decreased 6.6% to $22.4 million. Operating Income rose to $58.8 million from $42.6 million, equal to 14.1% of sales versus 11.1%.
From operating income to Net Income of $0.70 per share
Other expense narrowed to $3.0 million from $4.1 million. Income tax expense was $13.5 million at an effective rate of 24.2%, compared with $10.8 million and 28.0% a year ago, as share-based compensation and the OBBBA tax law provided greater benefit.
Net income was $42.3 million, or $0.70 per diluted share, compared with $27.8 million, or $0.46.
Nine-month results, View Point and the balance sheet
For the nine months, sales rose 8.5% to $1,217.0 million, and net income rose to $122.1 million, or $2.03 per diluted share, from $90.5 million, or $1.49. On April 1, 2026, Merit completed the Acquisition of View Point, adding the OneMark Detection Imaging System and Tissue Markers used to diagnose and localize breast and soft tissue tumors. Commercial sales of OneMark began in the third quarter. Cash from operations for the nine months was $175.2 million, compared with $198.9 million, as inventory Investment of $59.9 million weighed on cash. Outstanding borrowings were $747.5 million, with net available borrowing capacity of $697 million.
What to watch next
The filing offers no numerical outlook, so attention is likely to fall on whether Endoscopy and Oncology keep growing at double-digit rates, how quickly OneMark expands commercial availability through 2026 and 2027, and whether gross margin recovers from 48.2%.
