Truckload Segment Growth Drives Return to Profitability
Werner Enterprises, Inc. (NASDAQ:WERN) reported third quarter total revenues of USD 950.5 million, an increase of USD 179.0 million, or 23%, compared with the prior year, driven by a USD 194.2 million, or 37%, increase in Truckload Transportation Services revenues, partially offset by a decline in Werner Logistics revenues of USD 16.8 million. A portion of the TTS revenue increase, USD 65.8 million, was due to higher fuel surcharge revenues.
Net income attributable to Werner was USD 6.6 million, compared with a net loss of USD 20.6 million in the prior year period. Diluted earnings per share were USD 0.11, compared with a diluted loss per share of USD 0.34 a year earlier. The prior year period included USD 21.4 million of non-recurring litigation costs related to a class action settlement that did not recur this quarter.
Fleet Expansion Supports Revenue Growth
Average segment trucks in service within the Truckload Transportation Services segment totaled 8,668, an increase of 1,165 trucks, or 15.5%, year over year, driven primarily by the FirstFleet acquisition, partially offset by a smaller One-Way Truckload fleet. Dedicated unit trucks at quarter end totaled 7,090, representing 81% of the total TTS segment fleet, up from 67% a year ago.
Operating income was USD 17.0 million, compared with an operating loss of USD 13.0 million in the prior year, with operating margin of 1.8% improving 350 basis points from negative 1.7%. Non-GAAP adjusted operating income was USD 21.0 million, up USD 10.1 million, or 92%, from the prior year.
Cost Pressures Amid Strategic Investment
Management said rapidly rising fuel costs and elevated claims temporarily impacted near-term margins, even as the company's underlying freight revenue per truck growth demonstrated double-digit gains. The company made a deliberate decision to accelerate investments in driver recruiting and onboarding to capture rising customer demand and support fleet expansion as industry capacity tightens.
Continued freight market improvement, which management described as an early-stage upcycle, could support further margin recovery, while fuel cost volatility and claims expense trends remain variables that could affect the pace of profitability gains in coming quarters.
Freight and Cost Metrics to Track
Truckload Transportation Services revenue growth relative to the 37% increase reported this quarter, continued dedicated fleet expansion relative to the 81% share of the TTS fleet this period, and adjusted operating income relative to the 92% increase this quarter are among the items the company has flagged for investors.
