Quarterly Performance Beats Estimates Across Key End Markets
NXP Semiconductors (NASDAQ:NXPI) posted third quarter revenue of USD 3.79 billion, up 19% from a year earlier and above the consensus estimate of USD 3.76 billion. Automotive revenue crossed USD 2 billion for the first time, rising 17% excluding the divested MEMS sensor business, supported by content gains tied to software defined vehicle platforms.
Industrial and IoT revenue reached USD 820 million, up 39% year over year, with data center and factory automation applications driving most of the gain. Communications infrastructure and other revenue climbed 54% to USD 503 million. Mobile revenue declined 4% to USD 411 million, the only segment to contract during the quarter. Every geographic region grew at a double digit pace.
Margin Expansion and Capital Returns Accelerate
Non-GAAP gross margin reached 58.6%, up 160 basis points from a year earlier, reflecting improved factory utilization and a richer product mix. Non-GAAP operating margin rose to 37.1%, pushing non-GAAP earnings per share to USD 4.20, a 35% annual increase and roughly twice the pace of revenue growth.
Operating cash flow totaled USD 1.26 billion for the quarter, with net capital expenditure of USD 50 million producing non-GAAP free cash flow of USD 1.21 billion, equal to about 32% of revenue. The company returned USD 359 million to shareholders through dividends and buybacks during the quarter.
Net debt fell to USD 7.04 billion at quarter end from USD 8.96 billion at the end of 2025, narrowing the net leverage ratio to 1.3 times. The board separately authorized an additional USD 5 billion in share repurchases, bringing total authorization to approximately USD 6.3 billion, equal to about 10% of the company's current market capitalization.
Fourth Quarter Guidance and Segment Risk Factors
For the fourth quarter, the company guided revenue to USD 3.85 billion at the midpoint, a range of plus or minus USD 100 million, implying 15% annual growth or 18% when excluding the divested sensor business. Non-GAAP gross margin guidance stands at 59% at the midpoint, with non-GAAP earnings per share guided to USD 4.36, a 30% annual increase.
Automotive and industrial and IoT segments are guided higher for the fourth quarter, while mobile revenue is guided down in the mid teen percentage range year over year, continuing a trend seen through much of 2026. Management flagged joint venture losses tied to the VSMC and ESMC manufacturing partnerships of approximately USD 80 million for 2027, alongside planned capital expenditure of about 5% of revenue to expand back end capacity and build a new assembly facility in Malaysia.
Signposts Heading Into Fiscal 2027
The company has scheduled an investor day for March 3 in Boston, where it plans to update its long term financial model and address progress on the software defined vehicle ramp and the path toward a 60% non-GAAP gross margin. Execution against the expanded USD 6.3 billion buyback authorization, the pace of data center revenue scaling past its prior USD 500 million marker, and quarterly updates on the VSMC and ESMC joint venture build outs are the specific data points the company has pointed investors toward for the coming quarters. Automotive order patterns and mobile segment trends into the first quarter are additional factors against which the next quarterly print may be measured.
