Impairments Turn Adjusted Profit Into a Net Loss
Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) reported a third quarter 2026 net loss of USD 419.7 million on November 3, 2026. The gap to adjusted operating income of USD 349.0 million is explained by a before-tax net investment loss of USD 853.0 million, mostly Impairment losses recognized because the company intends to transfer assets supporting the 2026 Fortitude Re long-term care reinsurance transaction, plus a before-tax Closed Block adjusted operating loss of USD 135.6 million, partly offset by a tax benefit of USD 207.9 million. Core operations premium grew 4.7% on a constant currency basis, and adjusted operating Return on Equity was 21.3%. The company also noted a net tax-only benefit of USD 12.0 million.
Group Disability Claims Drive the Earnings Shortfall
The chief executive said underlying earnings fell short of expectations, as strong voluntary benefits performance was offset by elevated claim submissions in group disability. Unum US segment adjusted operating income dropped 35.2% to USD 315.3 million on premium income of USD 1,846.6 million, up 5.2%. In group disability, premium rose 4.0% to USD 816.6 million, but the benefit ratio, which measures claims as a share of premium, jumped to 67.1% on less favorable reserve updates, higher incidence, prior pricing actions and larger average claims in long-term disability. Unum International earned only USD 0.2 million against USD 44.2 million, with UK sales down 45.9%. Colonial Life moved the other way, with segment income up 35.0% to USD 169.4 million as its benefit ratio improved to 38.0%.
Reserve Updates, Non-GAAP Changes and Capital Return
Annual reserve assumption updates raised GAAP net income by USD 23.5 million. The company also revised its adjusted operating income definition after discussions with the staff of the Securities and Exchange Commission during an ongoing comment letter process, so full-year adjusted figures now include reserve assumption updates; GAAP net income is unaffected. Capital return was about USD 200 million of Buybacks and USD 80.1 million of dividends, bringing the year-to-date total to USD 1,038.5 million. Holding Company Liquidity was USD 1.4 billion, risk-based capital about 485%, and Book Value per share USD 68.90, up 6.7% year over year. Watch items include closing of the Fortitude Re transaction, claim trends in group disability and the Closed Block reserve outlook.
Where Things Stand
The loss is largely an accounting and portfolio-transfer effect, while the operating picture is weaker but still profitable. Unum Group (NYSE:UNM) lost USD 419.7 million after USD 853.0 million of before-tax investment losses, yet adjusted operating income of USD 349.0 million still produced a 21.3% adjusted return on equity in core operations. The decline from USD 479.4 million a year earlier reflects group disability claims, which management said fell short of expectations. Investors will look for the Fortitude Re closing and for evidence that disability incidence and claim size stabilize.
