Engineered Solutions Leads Growth

Applied Industrial Technologies (NYSE:AIT) reported on Tuesday fiscal first-quarter sales of USD 1.3 billion, up 7.6%, of which acquisitions added 0.3% and currency 0.2%. Organic sales rose 7.1%, with Engineered Solutions up 14.1% and Service Center up 3.5%. Pricing contributed about 200 basis points to growth.

Within Engineered Solutions, automation organic sales rose 20% for the second straight quarter, and fluid power rose at a high-teens rate on semiconductor and data center demand. Segment EBITDA margin widened 129 basis points to 15.1%. Orders rose 30% year over year, and the book-to-bill ratio reached its highest level in more than four years, according to management.

Service Center bookings rose 7% from the fourth quarter, outpacing normal seasonal patterns, while demand in Canada and Mexico stayed muted. Chief Executive Neil Schrimsher said October organic sales are running about 10% above a year earlier.

Margins, Cash and Capital

Gross margin was 30.4%, up 25 basis points, or nearly 50 basis points excluding LIFO expense of USD 5.6 million against USD 2.6 million a year earlier. Selling, distribution and administrative expense was 19.3% of sales, 12 basis points better, even with higher self-insured employee health claims. Operating income rose 11.3% to USD 143.6 million and EBITDA rose 9.6% to USD 160.3 million.

Operating cash flow was USD 86.4 million and free cash flow USD 73.4 million, or 67% of net income, reflecting working capital investment and higher capital expenditures. The company repurchased 245,000 shares for USD 80 million. Net leverage was 0.3 times EBITDA, unchanged from a year earlier. The board declared a quarterly dividend of USD 0.51 per share, payable on Nov. 30 to holders of record on Nov. 13.

Guidance and Board Change

Full-year EPS guidance moved up by USD 0.05 at both ends to USD 11.70 to USD 12.20, which the company attributed to a slightly lower diluted share count after first-quarter buybacks. Sales guidance of 4.0% to 6.5% growth and an EBITDA margin range of 12.5% to 12.8% were maintained. Guidance does not include future acquisitions or share repurchases and reflects trade policy, geopolitical and inflation uncertainty.

The board's longtime chairman retired at the Oct. 20 annual meeting after 12 years in the role, and a director who joined in 2017 succeeded him as independent chairman.
