Align Technology, Inc. (NASDAQ:ALGN) reported third-quarter 2026 non-GAAP diluted earnings per share of USD 2.80, up from USD 2.61 a year earlier and above a consensus estimate of USD 2.77. On a GAAP basis, diluted earnings per share were USD 1.90, compared with USD 0.78 in the prior-year quarter, which carried larger restructuring charges. Net revenue of USD 1.015 billion was above a consensus estimate of USD 1.00 billion, rising 1.9% year over year but falling 3.9% from the second quarter.
Clear Aligner revenue of USD 839.3 million grew 4.2% on volume of 690.6 thousand cases, a record for a third quarter. Imaging Systems and CAD/CAM Services revenue fell 7.6% to USD 175.5 million. President and CEO Joe Hogan tied the decline to a shift toward lower-priced scanner configurations and leasing or rental models, noting that scanner placements including those formats topped 157,000 systems worldwide.
Margins, Regions and Leadership Change
GAAP gross margin was 68.7%, and non-GAAP gross margin was 70.4%, flat from a year earlier. Hogan said the figure came in modestly below the company's own target because of higher fuel-related transportation costs, lower Clear Aligner prices and mix. GAAP operating margin improved to 16.7% from 9.7%, even with a USD 5.6 million UK VAT accrual, while non-GAAP operating margin of 24.4% was above the company's prior guidance.
North American orthodontist shipments rose year over year for the first time in six quarters, and dental support organization shipments grew at a double-digit rate. Doctors submitting cases reached a record of about 91,000, and utilization improved 3.4%. Separately, Hogan announced his planned departure, and the incoming chief executive is scheduled to join on November 2 as CEO-elect and a board member.
Guidance and Capital Return Plans
For the fourth quarter, the company guided to revenue of USD 1.00 billion to USD 1.02 billion, Clear Aligner volume growth in the low single digits, and Systems and Services revenue of USD 170 million to USD 180 million. It targets a non-GAAP gross margin near 72.0% and a non-GAAP operating margin near 26.0%.
Full-year 2026 revenue is guided to USD 4.11 billion to USD 4.13 billion, with a non-GAAP operating margin near 23.7%. Management described demand across dentistry as pressured by softer discretionary healthcare spending and capital equipment investment. It plans to present a full 2027 outlook with fourth-quarter results while targeting at least another 100 basis points of non-GAAP operating margin improvement.
