Wingstop (NASDAQ:WING) shares are extending a post-earnings rebound as investors weigh a third-quarter report that was better than feared against weak U.S. trends. EPS Beat Overshadows Revenue Miss and Comp Decline
Revenue of $185.1 million missed the $192.9 million estimate, while EPS of $1.08 beat the $1.02 consensus. Domestic same-store sales fell 5.4%, below expectations, and the company cut its 2026 domestic comp outlook to a decline of about 6.5% to 7%. Management said intensified macro pressure is slowing the results of its actions.
System-wide sales rose 6% to about $1.4 billion. Royalty revenue, franchise fees and other revenue rose 6.3% to $86.3 million, and Net Income was $29.1 million, or $1.07 per diluted share.
Marketing Refocus and Club Wingstop Loyalty Gains
Marketing is being refocused on driving consideration rather than awareness, with spending concentrated on occasions such as NFL football, a Watch Party bundle, a 30 for 30 Thursday night offer and a lemon pepper trio limited-time offer. Early signals include higher first-party average weekly sales, more reactivated guests and more organic search traffic.
Club Wingstop enrollment is ahead of plan, and new members return within 30 days at a rate 13 points higher than non-members. Purchase frequency is up almost 20% among members with 90 days in the program, and food quality complaints are down about 30% this year.
Unit Growth Guidance Lowered Amid Spending Increase
Wingstop opened 76 net new restaurants in the quarter, bringing the system to 3,331, up nearly 14%, with more than 2,300 committed in the pipeline. Net new unit guidance for 2026 was lowered to 440 to 450, or 14.4% to 14.7% growth, because ground-up shopping center timing is shifting sites into 2027. Domestic average unit Volume is about $1.8 million with roughly 60% unlevered cash-on-cash returns, and India is expected to open by early 2027.
SG&A guidance is now $138 million to $140 million, including added Marketing and about $21 million of stock-based compensation, which implies elevated fourth-quarter spending and adjusted EBITDA below prior expectations. Third-quarter adjusted EBITDA rose 0.5% to $64 million, and company-owned restaurant costs rose 340 basis points to 78.2% of sales after the 13-restaurant Tampa Acquisition for about $32 million.
Analyst Targets and Capital Returns
RBC has a $175 target and Wells Fargo $170, while TD Cowen has a Hold rating with a $120 target. Wingstop repurchased $25 million of stock in the quarter, or $102.9 million year to date, and declared a $0.33 quarterly dividend. The stock trades at 36.18 times forward Earnings with a market Capitalization of about $4.52 billion, and its 52-week range runs from $95.82 to $302.80.
Same-Store Sales and Fourth-Quarter Spend to Watch
Investors will watch whether comparable sales stabilize against the revised decline of about 6.5% to 7%, how elevated fourth-quarter marketing affects adjusted EBITDA and how net new unit openings track against the lowered 440 to 450 range. Management expects 2027 poultry costs at or slightly below this year's levels.
