Shares Dip Despite Earnings Beat
Philip Morris International (NYSE:PM) shares fell 1.35% pre-market today to $197.20, down $2.70 from the prior close of $199.90. The decline comes after the company reported third-quarter 2026 results before the open, with adjusted diluted EPS of $2.36, up 5.4% and up 5.8% excluding a one cent currency drag. That topped the $2.30 estimate by 2.61%.
Net revenues rose 5.5% to $11.4 billion, up 7.1% on an organic basis, and came in above the $11.3 billion estimate. Reported diluted EPS fell 4.9% to $2.12, mainly due to a non-cash fair value adjustment on equity security investments. The stock carries a forward P/E of 22.23 and a 3.01% dividend yield, within a 52-week range of $142.11 to $210.45.
Smoke-Free Growth and Record Operating Income
Operating income rose 14.1% to $4.9 billion, or 10.5% organically, and the company posted record quarterly highs for net revenue, gross profit and operating income. Cigarette and smoke-free shipments rose 0.6%, with smoke-free volumes up 2.7% and adjusted in-market sales growing at a high single-digit rate. Smoke-free products made up more than 40% of net revenues and are now sold in 110 markets.
IQOS heated tobacco shipments reached 41.5 billion units, up 1.5%, and VEEV e-vapor shipments rose 61.6%. In the U.S., ZYN shipments rose 4.2% to 3.2 billion pouches, and the brand gained more than 100 basis points of category share between June and September, based on market estimates cited by the company. Combustible net revenues rose 6.4%, helped by 8.9% pricing in the international segment, and Marlboro reached a record category share of 11.4%.
Outlook: Currency Tailwind Trimmed, Higher ZYN Spending
The company updated its full-year forecast for currency only. Adjusted diluted EPS is now expected at $8.29 to $8.44, a 9.9% to 11.9% increase from $7.54 in 2025, or 7.5% to 9.5% excluding currency. The favorable currency impact is now $0.18, previously $0.24.
Other assumptions include organic net revenue growth of 5% to 7%, with a greater likelihood of landing in the middle or upper half, and organic operating income growth of 7% to 9%, with a greater likelihood of landing in the middle or lower half. Management cited energy-related cost pressures tied to the Middle East conflict and expects higher ZYN investment in the fourth quarter, including an expanded brand campaign and a shift of most flagship ZYN products to 20-pouch cans from 15. The forecast assumes no share repurchases and operating cash flow of around $13.5 billion.
