Quarter Lands Above the Guided Range
Upbound Group owns Acima, which offers lease-to-own purchasing at retailers, Rent-A-Center, and the Brigit financial app. Upbound Group (NASDAQ:UPBD) had guided third quarter Revenue of USD 1.05 billion to USD 1.15 billion, adjusted EBITDA of USD 105 million to USD 115 million, and non-GAAP EPS of USD 0.85 to USD 0.95 on July 30. The company release said revenue was at the high end of its outlook while adjusted EBITDA and non-GAAP EPS exceeded the top of it. GAAP net earnings of USD 34 million were up USD 21 million from a year earlier. Operating Cash Flow rose 81% to about USD 163 million. Management also named Scott Young as Chief Operating Officer and Dev Chakraborty as head of Brigit, Leadership changes that investors may track.
Acima, Brigit and Rent-A-Center Split
Acima revenue fell about 6.5% to USD 585 million, yet its adjusted EBITDA rose about 15% to USD 86 million as the Lease charge-off rate improved to 8.7%. Brigit revenue rose 37% to USD 79 million, with paying users up about 27% to 1.84 million. Rent-A-Center revenue was roughly flat at USD 459 million, with same store sales up about 180 basis points for a fourth straight quarter. Operating cash flow and lower debt give the company room to return Capital while the lease portfolio shrinks. Acima also signed an integration agreement with Boost Mobile to be a preferred lease-to-own option in about 5,000 stores.
Growth Screen Versus the Filed Numbers
A screen listed Upbound as an aggressive small cap with a 1 year EPS change of 30.90%, a price near USD 23.80 and a 5.97% gain. These are unconfirmed published market data with no snapshot date, and the market cap was not verified. GAAP EPS of USD 0.58 comes off a much lower year earlier base, since net earnings rose USD 21 million, so the screen figure uses an unknown basis. Revenue guidance for the year was narrowed to USD 4.68 billion to USD 4.78 billion from USD 4.70 billion to USD 4.85 billion, a lower top end, and Acima sales are still declining, which are risks to the growth story.
Where Things Stand
Upbound Group (NASDAQ:UPBD) beat its range as Acima Credit performance improved, Brigit grew 37% and Rent-A-Center same store sales rose, so profit grew faster than sales. Cash generation was strong and debt is lower. Still, Top Line revenue is slipping at Acima, the revenue outlook was trimmed, and the 30.90% EPS figure from the screen is a mix of bases that could not be matched. The fourth quarter guide of USD 1.00 to USD 1.10 in non-GAAP EPS is the next test.
