On 30 September 2026 Conagra (NYSE:CAG) reported results for the first quarter of fiscal 2027, which ended on 30 August 2026. Net sales were $2,595.9 million, down 1.4% from $2,632.6 million a year earlier. Organic net sales fell 1.1%, with price and mix adding 1.0% and volume subtracting 2.1%. Adjusted operating margin was 11.5%, down 33 basis points. Diluted earnings per share were $0.36 on a GAAP basis, up 5.9%, and $0.41 on an adjusted basis, up 5.1%. The segment picture was uneven. Grocery & Snacks sales were $1,051.1 million, down 2.6%, and Refrigerated & Frozen sales were $1,053.8 million, down 2.1%. International rose 2.7% to $218.1 million and Foodservice rose 3.2% to $272.9 million. Chief executive John Brase described the start to the year as solid, and listed the company's priorities as restoring margins, increasing investment, reducing complexity and rebalancing capital allocation.
Cash Flow and the Balance Sheet
Cash generation was the weaker element of the quarter. Operating cash flow was an outflow of $4.2 million, compared with an inflow of $120.6 million in the prior-year quarter. Capital expenditure was $123.7 million, leaving free cash flow of negative $127.9 million. Dividends paid in the quarter totalled $167.5 million. Total debt at 30 August 2026 was $7,760.1 million against cash of $371.6 million, giving net debt of $7,388.5 million, which the company said was $193 million lower than a year earlier. The net leverage ratio stood at 3.99 times. Management guided to roughly 4.0 times at fiscal year-end, so leverage is a variable observers are likely to keep watching closely.
What the Company Expects for Fiscal 2027
Conagra reaffirmed its full-year outlook, which is guidance rather than reported fact. It expects organic net sales to change by between negative 3% and negative 1%, adjusted operating margin of 10.0% to 10.5% and adjusted earnings per share of $1.40 to $1.50. Capital expenditure is planned at about $550 million, free cash flow conversion above 90%, interest expense of about $360 million and an adjusted effective tax rate of about 24%. Set against the first-quarter adjusted figure of $0.41, the range implies that earnings progress will depend on how margin and volume develop over the remaining three quarters. The guidance also embeds an expected decline in sales, consistent with a business that is prioritising profitability and portfolio simplification over growth.
Margin Recovery Hinges on the Rest of the Year
Conagra's move to the S&P SmallCap 600 reflects size rather than operating quality, and the quarter itself showed organic sales still contracting as the company leans into new product launches, including protein-oriented lines aimed at GLP-1 users, to rebuild momentum. With free cash flow negative in the quarter and leverage near four times, the reaffirmed full-year guidance for continued sales declines alongside a modest earnings range puts the weight on margin recovery over the remaining three quarters rather than a return to growth.
