Broadcom Inc. (NASDAQ: AVGO) and Walmart Inc. (NYSE: WMT) announced a strategic collaboration at VMware Explore 2025 to deliver a modern private cloud and edge environment across Walmart’s global operations. Broadcom has been named a strategic vendor for virtualization software solutions and will leverage VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF) as the underlying platform intended to unify disparate infrastructure, improve consistency and support operational needs across stores, distribution centres and cloud-edge locations.

Walmart described the move as part of its ongoing effort to combine people-led retail operations with advanced technology. The deployment of VCF is aimed at creating a common operational model that can simplify software and operating system updates, centralise lifecycle management and provide clearer mappings between compute and storage resources. For an organisation with widely distributed infrastructure, the stated objectives include reducing operational complexity and enabling more predictable management of virtual machines and containerised workloads.

Key technical focuses outlined in the announcement include enhanced agility and scalability through decoupled compute and storage, simplified workload portability for cloud extensibility and orchestrated lifecycle management, and stronger resilience through automated, centralized patching and immutable snapshots to reduce disruption. The collaboration targets improvements in how Walmart manages application rollouts and failure recovery across its omni-channel environment.

“Being named a strategic vendor for virtualization by Walmart is a testament to the innovation and value our VMware software can bring to a global, trusted brand. VMware Cloud Foundation will provide the consistent and scalable private cloud infrastructure that plays a role in helping Walmart lead the next retail disruption," said Paul Turner, vice president of products, VMware Cloud Foundation Division at Broadcom. "VCF will help Walmart optimize resources and accelerate the rollout of innovative new services that benefit customers and associates worldwide.”
