Palantir (NASDAQ:PLTR) fell on Friday, October 30, 2026, moving with the AI sector in a selloff that sent the Nasdaq Composite to its worst session since June 5. There was no company-specific news. The Denver-based maker of data-analytics and AI software platforms for governments and corporations reports quarterly results on Monday, November 2, after the close.
Palantir is one of the most closely watched AI names in the market, and on Friday that status worked against it. Investors sold stocks linked to the AI buildout across hardware, cloud infrastructure and software.
What cracked the trade
The selling began with Intel (NASDAQ:INTC), which guided fourth-quarter Revenue to $15 billion to $16 billion, short of consensus near $17.3 billion, and warned it would burn cash this year. The shares had their steepest one-day drop on record, according to market data. The Philadelphia Semiconductor index closed at 10,688.80 after a steep fall.
Amazon (NASDAQ:AMZN) then reported trailing 12-month free Cash Flow of negative $42.4 billion and signaled higher Capital spending next year. Alphabet (NASDAQ:GOOGL) had already suffered its worst day ever on Thursday after negative free cash flow of $9.1 billion. The thread connecting them was concern that the biggest AI spenders are burning cash faster than they generate it.
A senior market analyst said: "The message from investors is becoming clearer: strong AI Demand is no longer enough on its own." "A lot of them kind of got ahead of themselves. It's all Earnings based and right now, they're not producing," a trading specialist said.
A broad AI retreat
Palantir fell alongside other AI-linked names. Oracle (NYSE:ORCL), which had risen early on its promise of positive free cash flow soon, reversed to close sharply lower. CoreWeave (NASDAQ:CRWV) dropped, and software companies including Datadog (NASDAQ:DDOG), AppLovin (NASDAQ:APP) and Snowflake (NYSE:SNOW) slid. Nvidia (NASDAQ:NVDA) closed at $204.64, and Advanced Micro Devices (NASDAQ:AMD) closed at $504.80 after a steep fall.
The Nasdaq Composite lost 747.73 points to 25,437.00, and the Nasdaq-100 closed at 28,384.85. The S&P 500 fell 140.32 points to 7,580.07 and the Dow Jones Industrial Average dropped 572.25 points to 51,770.31. Technology was the S&P 500's worst sector, while energy, consumer staples, utilities and health care rose.
A senior market strategist said: "The love-hate relationship with tech and AI continues, and investors are becoming more discerning following earnings." He also said the tech decline "does not appear abnormal" compared with earlier bull-market pullbacks.
High stakes for Monday
Palantir's report follows a week in which several companies that beat estimates, including Sandisk (NASDAQ:SNDK), Reddit (NYSE:RDDT) and Twilio, still saw their shares fall sharply. An Investment strategist said: "The earnings bar is very high." Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) reports the same afternoon, making Monday a busy day for technology investors.
Politics may also feature. Palantir does extensive government work, and the midterm elections are Tuesday, November 3. An investment manager said of a potential Democratic sweep: "I think that will be seen as negative for both the AI names".
What to watch
The main event is Palantir's Quarterly Report after Monday's close, including its outlook for commercial and government revenue. Investors will compare the results and guidance with expectations built up around AI software.
Beyond Monday, the midterm results arrive Tuesday, and the October jobs report is due Friday, November 6. The Federal Reserve held its benchmark rate range steady this week, and markets have priced in a December hike, part of the backdrop for richly valued technology stocks.
